February is the most aberrant month on the calendar. Not only are there less days in the month, but every four years, we add an extra day to it, which makes it doubly anomalous. Of course, we know it’s all about those maths and keeping the calendar in sync with the sun, yada yada. Still, it does seem a bit arbitrary as to why the extra day was added to February—perhaps because it was one of the last months to be added to the calendar and might be considered an afterthought.
Let’s not throw shade on February though. Its brevity is what makes it truly exceptional. And the leaplings or leapers (whichever they prefer) should be treated extra special on their birthday since it only occurs every four years. In fact, there’s even a cool club for leaplings: the Honor Society of Leap Year Babies. It has more than 10,000 members across the globe.
Yes, this is literally an extraordinary time. Which is why it seems appropriate to be deploying Workday Student over the course of this atypical year. An implementation like this is intentionally rare.
Here are some other fun facts about leap year:
- We call it leap year because the calendar leaps forward two days instead of one. So if your birthday fell on a Friday last year, it would normally fall on a Saturday this year, but because of the extra time inserted, your birthday leaps over Saturday and falls on Sunday instead. Get it?
- During the Middle Ages, Feb. 29 was viewed as an acceptable day for women to propose marriage to men. And in some countries, men could be fined for turning women down during leap year.
- Did you know there’s a Leap Year Festival held in Anthony, Texas, also the self-proclaimed “Leap Year Capital of the World? Looks like a good time!
