Did you know that July 17 was World Emoji Day? If you did, you probably know it’s because the calendar emoji on the iPhone displays the July 17 date. That was the day in 2002 when Apple introduced iCal at MacWorld Expo.* So, of course, someone had to decide that was a date worth celebrating, and how else but to use all the emojis? ❤️📅🥳

Those fun little characters aren’t relegated to texts, instant messages, and social media.  They’ve made their way into nearly all computer-mediated discourse. Even when you’re on the clock, email, listservs, and project management platforms like Jira have embraced emojis as shorthand to convey meaning and tone in the absence of verbal and facial cues. In case you wondered, yes, Workday recently introduced its own emoji to use in Slack, the organizational instant messaging platform. 👀
